Pacific
Amphitheatre, replete with an all-star assemblage
of the top artists from the world of popular
music, will reopen for the 2003 Orange County
Fair after an eight-year hiatus.
Concerts are scheduled for all 21 nights
that the Fair is open. The Fair is closed
on Mondays.
Opening the Pacific Amphitheatre Summer
Concert Series at the Orange County Fair
on Friday, July 11, will be the internationally
acclaimed Grammy award winning jazz singer-pianist
Diana Krall. Her album The Look
of Love has topped the Billboard charts
and helped her to win three Juno awards
last year for Artist of the Year, Album
of the Year and Best Vocal Jazz Album.
Six-time Grammy nomine Juan Gabriel
will perform next at the Amphitheatre, bringing
the Saturday, July 12, audience the voice
that has sold 30 million albums and filled
concert venues aroun the world. Recipient
of the ASCAP Songwriter of the Year award
in 1995, Gabriel was inducted into the Billboard
Latin Music Hall of Fame the following year.
His latest album, Canta Como, was
released last year.
With a mixture of confessional lyrics and
pop-based folk-rock, Melissa Etheridge
will show on Sunday, July 13, why she became
one of the '90s most popular recording artists.
Her breakthrough release, Yes I Am,
sold 6 million copies and helped her to
win the 1995 Grammy as best female rock
vocalist. Also appearing will be two-time
Grammy nominee Joan Osborne.
Strong lyrics, solid acoustic musicianship
and faultless three-part harmony made Crosby,
Stills & Nash one of the most successful
groups in the history of rock. On Tuesday,
July 15, the Pacific Amphitheatre audience
will see and hear this legendary group perform
a selection of their hits, including,"Teach
Your Children,""Suite: Judy Blue
Eyes," and"Our House."
Simon
LeBon, Andy Taylor, Roger Taylor, John Taylor
and Nick Rhodes, all five of the original
members of Duran Duran, will perform
together in America for the first time in
19 years on Wednesday, July 16, at 7:30
p.m. The internationally acclaimed group
has had Top 10 hits in both the United States
and the United Kingdom, including "Rio,"
"Hungry Like the Wolf," and "The
Reflex."
"Standing in the Shadows of Motown,"
featuring the Funk Brothers, will
come to the Pacific Amphitheatre on Thursday,
July 17. The Funk Brothers were the backup
band for many of te key performers from
the golden era of Motown, including Marvin
Gaye, the Temptations, and Diana Ross and
the Supremes. Appearing with the band will
be a number of guest vocalists.
Hip-Hop / rock crossover band 311
and special guest Something Corporate
perform on Friday, July 18. 1995's release
of the CD 311 produced the Number One modern
rock song "Down" and sold over
3 million copies. Show time is 7:30 p.m.
Creator of some of Latin America's greatest
hits, Marco Antonio Solis will display
his artistry on Saturday, July 19. He was
still a teenager when he formed Los Bukis
in the early '70s, and over the next two
decades the group profoundly influenced
the norteno and Tejano music of Mexico and
the southwestern U.S. As a solo artist he
earned platinum status for such LPs as Quiereme,
Inalcanzable and Por Amor a Mi Pueblo.
Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith,
two of contemporary Christian music's greatest
artists, will be featured on Sunday, July
20. Amy Grant, holder of a Grammy for Best
Female Gospel Performance and three Dove
awards, has changed her persona from strictly
gospel singer to a more contemporary pop
image. Michael W. Smith is one of the most
enduringly popular artists in Christian
contemporary music, and he too is finding
success as a mainstream artist. Over his
career he has won both Dove and Grammy awards,
selling more than 7 million records and
posting 25 No. 1 hits.
Devo, one of new wave's most innovative
and successful bands, comes to the Pacific
Amphitheatre alongside the eclectic rock
of Cake on Tuesday, July 22, at 7:30
p.m. Devo scored a Top 10 and MTV hit with
"Whip It" in 1980 and became cult
sensations with their robotic rhythms and
highly stylized visual presence. Cake burst
onto the music scene with 1995's "The
Distance" from their second album Fashion
Nugget.
The pioneering, critically acclaimed and
Grammy-winning Steely Dan kick off
their first concert tour in three years
on July 23 at 7:30 p.m. Led by longtime
creative partners Donald Fagen and Walter
Becker, the band has carved one of the most
distinctive paths in contemporar music,
sporting a signature sound made popular
with such songs as"Reeling in the Years"
and "Deacon Blue." Their latest
album, Everything Must Go, was released
on June 10.
On July 24, The Doobie Brothers
and Buddy Guy perform at 7:30 p.m.
In their journey from one of California's
most popular pop/rock bands of the '70s,
the Doobie Brothers evolved from a mellow,
post-hippie boogie band to the slick, soul-inflected
pop band that it is today. Blues legend
Buddy Guy has been a phenomenon since he
released his first singles in 1958.
The Doors of the 21st Century will
be in the spotlight on Friday, July 25.
Featuring original members Robbie Krieger
and Ray Manzarek, along with vocalist Ian
Astbury of The Cult, the band will perform
seminal works from their canon, including
"Light My Fire, ""L.A. Woman,"
and "Break On Through."
Everyone "oughta" know about
seven-time Grammy winner Alanis Morrisette,
who will be performing Saturday, July 26.
Jagged Little Pill, released in the
summer of 1995, featured the singles "You
Oughta Know," "Hand in My Pocket,"
"All I Really Want," and "Ironic."
The album sold over 28 million worldwide
and established Morissette as an international
superstar. Singer/songwriter Jason Mraz
opens the Saturday program.
Few artists have had as much influence
on the course of popular music as Bob
Dylan, who appears on Sunday, July 27.
He has set the bar for a generation of songwriters
with his poetic lyrics and unique voice.
Performing Tuesday, July 29, at 7:30 p.m.,
Alan Jackson has sold 36 million
albums worldwide since his 1989 debut. Jackson's
hit single, "Where Were You (When the
World Stopped Turning)," earned the
2003 Grammy Award for Best Country Song.
His latest album, Drive, earned the Academy
of County Music's Album of the Year award.
Special guest Joe Nichols was awarded the
2003 ACM's award for Top New Male Vocalist.
Kenny Loggins and special guest
Michael McDonald perform on Wednesday,
July 30. Both popular singer-songwriters
have numerous hits to their credit. Two-time
Grammy winner Loggins scored with his Number
One hit "Footloose." Michael McDonald,
former singer for the Doobie Brothers, has
won three Grammys, as well as hit singles
with "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time
You're Near)" and "Yah Mo B There,"
his duet with James Ingram.
Using modern sonics and timeless rock conventions,
3 Doors Down burst on the scene with
its debut song"Kryptonite" and
debut album The Better Life. In its Thursday,
July 31, appearance, the rock band will
perform audience favorites, including their
latest hit single"When I'm Gone."
Led by front man and flutist Ian Anderson,
Jethro Tull, performing Aug.1, has
forged a musical genre that incorporates
heavy guitar riffs, folk melodies and British
blues. Founded in the late '60s, the band
released a string of Top 10 albums, including
Thick As A Brick, Passion Play and
the ubiquitous Aqualung.
Roxy Music comes to the stage on
Saturday, Aug. 2 featuring original band
members Bryan Ferry, Phil Manzanera and
Andy Mackay. Roxy Music is a one of a kind
mix of glamour, romance, and futurism laced
with innovative music, dazzling virtuosity
and unforgettable pop hooks. Southern California
favorites David Lindley & El Rayo-X
are special guests. El Rayo-X fuse an eclectic
blend of Bluegrass, Worldbeat, Tex-Mex,
Blues- Rock & Rock 'n' Roll. They are
re-forming for their only L.A. appearance
this year.
Closing out the concert series on Sunday,
Aug. 3, will be Boston, the group that produced
one of the fastest-selling debut albums
in history. Under the guidance of Tom Scholz,
Boston has been a favorite of rock radio
for over twentyfive years. They are touring
in support of their latest album, Corporate
America.
