Before
toys became mass-produced marketing tools, individuals handcrafted
unique playthings that were, more often than not, pieces
of folk art reflecting the popular whimsy of a local region
and culture. Toys varied from simple blocks to complicated
mechanical toys with movable parts, constructed of everything
from wood and fabric to metal and clay.
With this in mind, the 2005 OC Fair introduces the third
annual Sculpture Exhibit: Art on a Stick Toy Challenge.
The goal of the Toy Challenge is to stimulate the imagination
of both children and adults and to ignite creativity with
toys that are imaginative, whimsical and wellcrafted. Artists
are asked to create for this juried show toys that not only
are fun and engaging but also reflect a unique vision.
The five divisions for competition are Recycled, Toys That
Move, Dolls & Plush, Activity Toys, and Board Games.
Cash prizes will be awarded for class and division winners,
a Best of Show winner, and a People's Choice Award.
The Art on a Stick Toy Challenge is open to all residents
of the United States, ages 5 and older. Entry deadline is
noon on Friday, May 20. The complete prospectus is available
online at www.ocfair.com.
Selected entries will be displayed during the 113th OC Fair,
July 8-31.
